Online tutorials
Intute: www.vts.intute.ac.uk - A range of tutorials on using the Internet to find out more about specific subjects (eg Art and Design, Modern Languages, Maths, History and much more). Good points: Each tutorial allows you to dip in and out of sections by clicking on the headings on the left hand side. If you spot anything you like the sound of, you simply click it to add it to a 'Links Basket' then try it out at your leisure. Limitations: In order to get the most from the Intute tutorials you need to be reasonably confident with using the Internet.
BBC webwise: www.bbc.co.uk/webwise/course/index.shtml - Online intro to mouse, keyboard etc for ICT beginners, from the BBC. Click the link above then click ‘Computer Tutor'. Needs a fast ('broadband') internet connection to work properly. Good Points: Well laid out and easy to use. Limitations: Aimed mainly at basics.
Myguide: www.myguide.gov.uk - A government-funded site covering basic IT topics plus a range of more specialist ones. You can work through the basic 'Starting with Computers' course just by clicking on it but if you want to try something more specialist (eg the course on using e-Bay or on downloading music) you need to supply some personal details first. Also offers simple, free, web-based email accounts. Good Points: Some interesting specialist topics. Limitations: Limited coverage in each topic; enough to get started - but not much more. Need to supply personal details for some courses.
