Frequently asked questions relating to use of Moodle by tutors

If you have any questions you would like answered on this page, please email them to ralph.cullimore@devon.gov.uk

1. What is Moodle?

  • A ‘Virtual Learning Environment’ in the form of a website where learners log on to use learning resources and do activities
  • Tutors can set up and adjust courses
  • Learners can use and contribute to courses
  • Moodle is ‘Open Source’ software, free, widely-used & widely customised in ACL, FE and HE
  • Not difficult to use for basics – mainly point & click web skills
  • Short for Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment
(for more information about Moodle in general, see www.moodle.org)

2. How do I make my course appear in another language - eg French?

To change your course to display wording in French you need to:

  1. login as yourself (ie tutor)
  2. click the 'Settings' link on the left hand side of the course page
  3. scroll down to the 'Force Language' box
  4. choose the appropriate language - eg Francais
  5. click Save Changes

Note that this will force everyone to see the wording in French. As an alternative you might want to leave the course with English as the 'default' but ask learners to change their own preference to French when they are confident enough. See next item for this.

3. How do learners get to see their course(s) in another language - eg French?

Learners can choose to have all their interactions with the Moodle in a specific language, eg French. To do this the learner needs to:

  1. login with their username & password
  2. click their name (at the top right of main page - important: click the name and NOT the word 'logout')
  3. click the 'Edit Profile' tab
  4. scroll down to 'Preferred language'
  5. click appropriate language - eg Francais
  6. click Update Profile
